About Functional Medicine
Our Approach
At Thrive Integrative Medicine, we adhere to a structured approach aimed at revitalizing three major body systems: adrenals, gastrointestinal function, and mitochondria/detox processes. By restoring these systems, we effectively address symptoms like hormonal imbalances, chronic fatigue, GI issues, weight management challenges, as well as depression and anxiety. Our diagnostic strategy involves three key functional lab tests: the adrenal stress profile, GI Map, and organic acid test. Click through the sections below under "Deepen Your Understanding" for detailed insights into each system and its corresponding assessment tests.
Typically, we initiate our assessment with the adrenal test to evaluate hormone levels, specifically cortisol and DHEA. Dysregulation in cortisol often manifests as chronic fatigue, mood disturbances, lack of energy, brain fog, and sleep disruptions. Cortisol also plays a crucial role in maintaining the gut's immune system integrity. Disruptions in this balance can lead to compromised gut health, making us susceptible to pathogens like yeast, bacteria, and parasites. This triggers systemic inflammation, increases the risk of autoimmune diseases, and results in various symptoms including joint pain, skin conditions, decreased neurotransmitter production such as serotonin, recurrent illnesses and gastrointestinal discomfort such as bloating, constipation, diarrhea and reflux).
An overwhelmed GI system by pathogens adversely impacts our mitochondria and detox systems, impairing energy conversion from food and affecting detoxification processes. This contributes to symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, weight issues, depression, neurological complications, and inflammation.
We've developed a comprehensive 10-month program—the Thrive and Beyond program—crafted to meticulously evaluate and systematically heal each body system, concentrating on one system at a time. This program is engineered to foster holistic healing from within, commencing with the adrenals, progressing to gut health, and culminating in optimizing mitochondrial health and detox capabilities.
Throughout this journey, you'll receive personalized 1-on-1 guidance from our healthcare provider and certified health coach. Beyond just addressing and correcting these bodily systems, our goal is to impart knowledge about simple yet impactful lifestyle changes that will significantly influence your future health. This program doesn't just aim for short-term corrections but endeavors to equip you with tools for sustained well-being and vitality.
Acknowledging individual differences, our Rise Program empowers a self-guided wellness journey. This comprehensive program includes three phases, each designed to address specific aspects of your health:
Phase 1: Addressing the Adrenals (Months 1-4)
- The primary focus of phase 1 is to restore energy, vanish brain fog, improve sleep and balance hormones. The adrenals also have a significant impact on out gut health, so by restoring the adrenals, we will set the stage for improved gut health in Phase 2.
- Phase 2 will focus on assessing the gut microbiome, addressing and treating invasive pathogens and restoring the balance of good bacteria. This will help improve symptoms related to bloating, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux, skin conditions and more. A healthy gut is essential for reducing inflammation that negatively impacts the body.
- Phase 3 will focus on addressing the health and function of our mitochondria. Think of mitochondria as tiny power plants inside your cells. Their main job is to take the food you eat and turn it into energy that your cells can use to function properly.. When mitochondria are working well, they efficiently produce energy and help keep your cells healthy. However, if mitochondria are not functioning properly—due to factors like poor diet, stress, or illness—they can’t produce enough energy. This can lead to fatigue, weight gain, and other health problems because your cells aren’t getting the power they need to operate effectively. So, healthy mitochondria are key to feeling energetic and keeping your body running smoothly. Additionally, this program will assess your body's ability to detoxify, ensuring that it effectively eliminates harmful substances and maintains overall health.

DEEPEN YOUR UNDERSTANDING
ADRENAL GLANDS
The adrenals are tiny glands located on top of your kidneys and are responsible for producing hormones, including cortisol. Cortisol plays a crucial role in managing stress, regulating metabolism, and maintaining energy levels. If cortisol production is disrupted, it can lead to symptoms of chronic fatigue, sleep disturbances, brain fog, cravings for sweet and salty foods, weight gain and digestive problems.
An adrenal test is a series of saliva tests that measures cortisol levels and patterns. This testing can reveal imbalances or dysfunction in your adrenal system, such as adrenal hypofunction or hyperfunction.
Our practitioners will use the results of these tests to create a personalized protocol aimed at restoring the health of your adrenal glands. This protocol may include lifestyle modifications, dietary recommendations, and targeted supplementation to rebalance your hormones and improve your overall well-being.

THE GUT MICROBIOME
The gut microbiome is a complex and vital ecosystem of microorganisms that reside in your gastrointestinal tract. It supports digestion, strengthens the immune system, regulates inflammation, and even influences mood. A balanced gut microbiome is essential for optimal health and can have far-reaching effects on various aspects of the body's functioning.
Disruptions in the gut microbiome can asymptomatic but can also lead to a range of symptoms, including:
The GI-MAP Test
The GI-MAP (Gastrointestinal Microbial Assay Plus) is an advanced diagnostic test that provides comprehensive insights into the gut microbiome and gastrointestinal health. It analyzes stool samples to identify the presence of various microorganisms, including bacteria, parasites, fungi, and viruses, offering a detailed view of the gut ecosystem.
The GI-MAP can also assess markers related to inflammation, immune function, and digestion. Your provider will use this information to diagnose gut-related issues, guide treatment plans, and optimize overall gut health by addressing imbalances and dysbiosis.

mITOCHONDRIAL HEALTH AND DETOX CAPACITY
Mitochondrial health and detox capacity are vital aspects of functional medicine. Mitochondria are cellular powerhouses responsible for energy production, and their dysfunction can lead to various health issues. Functional medicine assesses factors like energy production, oxidative stress, mitochondrial DNA, nutrient status, and inflammation to ensure optimal mitochondrial function.
Additionally, detoxification is the body's natural process for eliminating toxins. In functional medicine, supporting detox capacity involves assessing liver health, providing essential nutrients, promoting gut health, optimizing elimination pathways, and reducing toxin exposure. By addressing these factors, functional medicine aims to enhance overall health and vitality.
Organic Acid Test
The Organic Acid Test (OAT) is a fundamental tool in functional medicine, as it examines organic acid levels in urine, providing crucial insights into metabolic health. Its significance lies in its ability to reveal various aspects of well-being, including nutrient deficiencies, energy production, neurotransmitter balance, and the presence of toxins or metabolic byproducts that may indicate underlying health concerns.
OATs are particularly relevant in functional and integrative medicine because they can help healthcare practitioners pinpoint the root causes of various chronic conditions and symptoms. For instance, an OAT can provide information about imbalances in neurotransmitters, which can be linked to mood disorders like depression and anxiety. It can also detect markers associated with oxidative stress and inflammation, which are key contributors to many chronic diseases. Additionally, an OAT can assess the effectiveness of dietary interventions, nutritional supplements, and lifestyle changes.
