About Functional Medicine
WHAT WE TREAT
We look at every aspect of a patient’s lifestyle and history to treat the body as a whole.
Each treatment plan is completely personalized for every patient. However, we focus on treating a wide array of common conditions using an integrative approach including:

Autoimmune diseases: An autoimmune disease occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks a healthy part of the body. Some of these conditions have a genetic component and can be passed down in families, while others might be triggered by infections or environmental factors.
All autoimmune diseases are inflammatory and functional medicine focuses on decreases overall inflammation to better manage symptoms of autoimmune diseases.

Mental health and stress: Stress is a natural part of life. Stress can be a motivating force that aids in meeting deadlines, delivering effective presentations, staying productive and punctual. However, when stress persists for extended periods, it can become detrimental to the mind and body.
Persistent stress and many other factors heighten the risk of mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression as well as sleep disturbances and even physical pain.
By regulating the production and regulation of cortisol, optimizing the gut microbiome and maximizes your body's ability to produce neurotransmitters, many symptoms of mental health disorders (depression, anxiety) can be alleviated.

Gastrointestinal: Identifying the underlying causes of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms is challenging. Many people present with symptoms such as acid reflux (GERD), food intolerances, bloating, IBS-C, IBS-D, and Crohn's and some people have NO GI symptoms but present with other vague complaints.
With functional medicine, the gut microbiome is addressed and corrected by eradicating pathogens and restoring commensal (good) bacteria. by restoring the health of the gut microbiome, inflammation and bowel disorders are often resolved.

Hormones: Hormonal imbalances can lead to various unwanted symptoms, such as fatigue, weight gain, skin conditions, or disturbances in mood. Hormones are chemicals made by glands in your endocrine system and sent into your bloodstream. An imbalance will occur when there's either too much or too little of a hormone. This can lead to chronic fatigue, brain fog, PMS, PCOS, peri and post menopause, hypogonadism, hypothyroidism and low libido.
An integrative approach to hormonal balance includes comprehensive testing and restoring the function of the adrenal glands to regulate hormone production and patterns. In some cases, replacement with bioidentical hormonal replacement therapy may be recommended.

DEEPEN YOUR UNDERSTANDING
ADRENAL GLANDS
The adrenals are tiny glands located on top of your kidneys and are responsible for producing hormones, including cortisol. Cortisol plays a crucial role in managing stress, regulating metabolism, and maintaining energy levels. If cortisol production is disrupted, it can lead to symptoms of chronic fatigue, sleep disturbances, brain fog, cravings for sweet and salty foods, weight gain and digestive problems.
An adrenal test is a series of saliva tests that measures cortisol levels and patterns. This testing can reveal imbalances or dysfunction in your adrenal system, such as adrenal hypofunction or hyperfunction.
Our practitioners will use the results of these tests to create a personalized protocol aimed at restoring the health of your adrenal glands. This protocol may include lifestyle modifications, dietary recommendations, and targeted supplementation to rebalance your hormones and improve your overall well-being.

THE GUT MICROBIOME
The gut microbiome is a complex and vital ecosystem of microorganisms that reside in your gastrointestinal tract. It supports digestion, strengthens the immune system, regulates inflammation, and even influences mood. A balanced gut microbiome is essential for optimal health and can have far-reaching effects on various aspects of the body's functioning.
Disruptions in the gut microbiome can asymptomatic but can also lead to a range of symptoms, including:
The GI-MAP Test
The GI-MAP (Gastrointestinal Microbial Assay Plus) is an advanced diagnostic test that provides comprehensive insights into the gut microbiome and gastrointestinal health. It analyzes stool samples to identify the presence of various microorganisms, including bacteria, parasites, fungi, and viruses, offering a detailed view of the gut ecosystem.
The GI-MAP can also assess markers related to inflammation, immune function, and digestion. Your provider will use this information to diagnose gut-related issues, guide treatment plans, and optimize overall gut health by addressing imbalances and dysbiosis.

- Digestive issues like bloating, gas, diarrhea, or constipation.
- Fatigue, weight changes, and skin problems.
- Mood disturbances, such as anxiety and depression.
- Sugar cravings and brain fog.
- Weakened immune response and increased sensitivities.
- Inflammation and inflammatory autoimmune diseases.

mITOCHONDRIAL HEALTH AND DETOX CAPACITY
Mitochondrial health and detox capacity are vital aspects of functional medicine. Mitochondria are cellular powerhouses responsible for energy production, and their dysfunction can lead to various health issues. Functional medicine assesses factors like energy production, oxidative stress, mitochondrial DNA, nutrient status, and inflammation to ensure optimal mitochondrial function.
Additionally, detoxification is the body's natural process for eliminating toxins. In functional medicine, supporting detox capacity involves assessing liver health, providing essential nutrients, promoting gut health, optimizing elimination pathways, and reducing toxin exposure. By addressing these factors, functional medicine aims to enhance overall health and vitality.
Organic Acid Test
The Organic Acid Test (OAT) is a fundamental tool in functional medicine, as it examines organic acid levels in urine, providing crucial insights into metabolic health. Its significance lies in its ability to reveal various aspects of well-being, including nutrient deficiencies, energy production, neurotransmitter balance, and the presence of toxins or metabolic byproducts that may indicate underlying health concerns.
OATs are particularly relevant in functional and integrative medicine because they can help healthcare practitioners pinpoint the root causes of various chronic conditions and symptoms. For instance, an OAT can provide information about imbalances in neurotransmitters, which can be linked to mood disorders like depression and anxiety. It can also detect markers associated with oxidative stress and inflammation, which are key contributors to many chronic diseases. Additionally, an OAT can assess the effectiveness of dietary interventions, nutritional supplements, and lifestyle changes.

What can i expect?
The approach to treatment is a whole body approach. First, we assess the adrenals to assess cortisol regulation. If cortisol is dysregulated, it can lead to a cascade of symptoms. We correct this first by calming the nervous system. Then we look at the GI system for pathogens, such as bacteria, yeast, parasites or leaky gut. These can further exacerbate the symptom pattern. We then take a look at our detox system and how well we are detoxing and if there is an accumulation of heavy metals, bacteria, toxins etc. By doing it in this order, we calm the system, decrease inflammation, prepare the body for healing the GI system and the detox process.
What labs will be conducted?
Thrive Integrative Medicine focuses on a holistic approach, understanding that every system within the human body is connected, meaning that if one system is performing poorly, it is likely symptomatic of other issues.
In order to identify the root cause of symptoms, the following labs/tests are conducted:
